Nani and George
L.A. Union Station, Los Angeles, Ca.
We met Nani and George early in the morning to take their engagement shots at Union Station in LA. It was the first time we had done an urban setting type engagement shoot and it was fun. There’s some getting used to people and action all around the couple but they were more than up for it.

We also went across the street to Olvera Street and took some pictures there.

We’ll be doing Nani and George’s wedding photography and videography later this year in Laguna Beach, so stay tuned for those images.

Stephanie and Ryan: October 11
The Channel Cat, Santa Barbara, California

Stephanie and Ryan Morgan were married on October 11 aboard the Channel Cat. Truth be told, we had not heard of the Channel Cat prior to their wedding. There were about 100 guests attending the wedding and everybody had enough room to move about the catamaran. Wedding photography aboard the catamaran went well for us, despite the choppy conditions we found coming back from the ceremony. Outside of that, things went smoothly aboard the Channel Cat.

On a side note, the food at Ryan and Stephanie’s wedding was exceptional. Catering was done by DUO Catering and Events from Santa Barbara. Their menu was seasonal and locally harvested.

Stephanie and Ryan
Santa Barbara Courthouse, California
Some pictures we took of Stephanie and Ryan prior to their wedding. This was at the Santa Barbara Courthouse.

The Santa Barbara Courthouse provides plenty of nooks for wedding photographers to either take engagement pictures or wedding pictures. There’s an elevator leading to the top of the building with great views of the city, as well as the Sunken Gardens, several other distinct gardens and well-manicured lawns throughout the premises. As I understand it, to reserve the Santa Barbara Courthouse for weddings is free but reservations are on a first come, first served basis. For more information on the courthouse, visit Santa Barbara’s Wedding Guide’s info or the Official Santa Barbara Courthouse Website.

2009 Animal Rescue Volunteers (ARV) Wag N’ Walk
Rancho Sim Community Park, Simi Valley, California
Jessica and I volunteered taking pet portraits at the 2009 Wag N’ Walk, a fundraiser to benefit Animal Rescue Volunteers (ARV).
ARV is a non-profit group of volunteers in LA and Ventura counties that aim to decrease animal overpopulation and euthanasia rates by expanding pet spay/neuter program by working with local veterinarians. They rescue animals from shelters, find homes for them and educate the public on the brutal realities of puppy mills and dissuade the public from unknowingly contributing to their existence.
Despite the near 100-degree heat, we had a great time taking pet portraits and candid shots of the event at Rancho Simi Community Park. To see the complete set of pictures, visit the Zenfolio web gallery at wagnwalk.zenfolio.com. All proceeds from the picture sales go to ARV.

Amanda and Mike: August 15, 2009
Manning Park, Montecito, California

Santa Barbara has numerous little wedding nooks but this was our first time at Manning Park in Montecito. At first glance, the park is a photographer’s nightmare. Massive trees shade most of the park but there are also big chunks of bright sun throughout the park that can easily blow out an exposure.
We were fortunate to find several useful spots within the park. This picture of Amanda above is one of my favorites – mainly because of the contrast between the bride and the shade behind her. Oh sure Amanda looks great, but did you see how I positioned her in the frame? Anyone?
The bride made a grand entrance, arriving in an antique car (the make and model elude me).

Very chill wedding. Great fiddle band playing, good food and cold beers on a warm day.

Cristina and Eric: July 15, 2009
Biltmore Hotel, Butterfly Beach, Santa Barbara, California
While nerves and jitters often overtake couples on their wedding day, Cristina and Eric were as cool as cucumbers. When we first saw them, they were comfortably strolling up to the Biltmore as if it was just another day. Jessica and I completely goofed up by not getting a picture of this – we were star-struck from having seen Giada DeLaurentis of the Food Network pull up to the Biltmore lobby (She’s shorter than I thought).
The Biltmore, of course, has several scenic sites for pictures but, this being a Saturday, there were multiple weddings on the grounds. Nonetheless, we got some great shots in the lobby and out in the expansive lawn facing Butterfly Beach.

Rachelle and Norm Houck: June 27, 2009
Keyways Winery, Temecula, California
This was our first time out in Temecula photographing a wedding and, unlike the breezy, coastal weddings we normally shoot in Santa Barbara, Temecula was hot. I forget the exact temperature so I’ll exaggerate – it was 120 degrees Fahrenheit!! No, in all honesty, it was 119. But, it was a dry heat.
Temperature extremes aside, the wedding at Keyways Winery went smoothly, thanks in great part to Annette Nielsen, Events Coordinator at Keyways Winery. Annette’s the real deal; she’s calm, collected and ready to answer any and all questions.
Luckily for us, as well, the couple and their respective families were ready to celebrate – good food, good drink and plenty of dancing. God knows we’ve been to events where there’s been no booze, no dancing and plenty of grumpy faces.
There was no grumpiness here – even when we woke up at 5:20 am to photograph a time-lapse clip of the Temecula sunrise for the couple (The things I do for you people!). In all honesty, I had no idea what I was going to do with this sunrise footage. Luckily for us, it fit perfectly into the Super-8 wedding “short film” we made for them.
